After living in West Virginia for seven years, we are pretty familiar with all of the wild and wonderful qualities of our "home" state. While most of the native traditions are more than a little questionable, even I have to admit that the locals really know how to celebrate the 4th of July. As is our family's annual tradition, we celebrated our freedom in true WV style--eating fried food and lighting stuff on fire. Our good friends, the Castagnettos, host a yearly blow out that cannot be beat, and this year was no exception.

The kids LOVED the snow cones...

...& of course, the sparklers.

After dinner we always join the rest of the neighbors for a fireworks show. There are no words to describe the colorful cast of characters that make up her neighborhood--let me just say they are some of West Virginia's finest. A few of the men, more than a little tipsy, take turns lighting off a collection of explosives while the rest of us huddle at a safe distance. Although I'm sure the element of danger adds something to the evening, they always put on a really great show. As usual, it was a fun and memorable night!

I think it sounds like Blake would fit in perfectly in West Virginia...maybe we can blow stuff up together sometime.
